Description

This programme is designed to prepare prospective teachers for the challenges of teaching English as Second Language (ESL) within Canada or overseas. The programme consists of 200 hours of theory and includes 10 hours of teacher observation and a 10-hour supervised practicum at the end of the course.

This intensive course will be taught for 8 consecutive weeks from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. The practicum will be scheduled for 4 to 5 consecutive days in the late afternoon or early evening in the weeks following the course.

Course content

The programme consists of four main components.

• Methodology, which includes Second Language Instruction (SLI) teaching principles, procedures, and techniques.
• Language Awareness, which provides an overview of English grammar and pronunciation.
• Observation, which gives trainees the opportunity to observe an authentic ESL environment and see the methodology "in action".
• Practicum, which allows trainees to "put it all together" in an authentic ESL teaching environment.

Prerequisites

Candidates whose first language is English must meet the following requirements:

• Hold an undergraduate degree or equivalent language competence in oral and written English.
• Be 20 years of age or older

Candidates whose first language is not English must meet one of the following language proficiency requirements:

• GV Intermediate Three Level Speaking or higher; or
• Have successfully completed the Cambridge First Certificate (FCE) within the last year; or
• Have successfully completed an oral interview with the TESL Program Coordinator at a GV Intermediate Three level

Aims of the course

The course aims to provide the trainees with the awareness, skills, and confidence they need to effectively teach ESL/EFL to adults in accordance with current research and practice, know as Communicative Language Teaching. While the course will not prescribe a single "right" way of teaching, it will provide trainees with a sound theoretical and practical base from which they will be encouraged to develop their own personal teaching philosophy and style throughout the course and into their professional careers.

Certificate

Participants who successfully complete the programme will receive a GV Toronto TESL course certificate. Students who wish to write the TKT exams will receive a GV TESL course Diploma and 3 certificates from the University of Cambridge.
